Local Edge Playlist: 10/31/10
I've made no secret for my love of The Local Edge with Mark. Rarely do I ever turn my radio on while at home. In fact, there's only one hour a week when that happens: Sunday night from 11 pm to midnight. Many artists that I've posted on my playlists, including The Roomsounds and Katie Carroll, I might not have discovered were it not for Mark and his show.
The one frustration that I had recently, however, was the lack of updated playlists on the KDGE website. I asked Mark if he'd mind if I posted the playlists on this site, and he said to go for it. Since then, he has updated about three months worth of playlists. Still, I will be posting these almost immediately after the show. That means if you just can't wait to find out the name of that awesome song you heard, wait no more. And Mark, if you ever fall behind on your posts again, don't worry. I've got your back.
"Cut the Lights", Manned Missiles
"You Still Love Me Blondie", Matthew and the Arrogant Sea
"New Dress", The Orbans
"Knife Fight", Calhoun
"Broken Camera", Stanton
"Dammit", Smile Smile
"Ghoul Party", Slider Pines
"My Niagra Heart", Spooky Folk
"Darker than the Night", Dead Twins
"Yellow Eyes", The Burning Hotels
"Returning to the Air", The Slow Burners
"The Great Exhibition", Roy Robertson
"You're No Good", Pale Horse
"Lonesome Tune", The Beaten Sea

The Lucky Thirteen: 10/18/10
Radio station KXT is approaching its one year anniversary, and they're currently doing their pledge drive. As far as I'm concerned, no other stations even comes close to playing the caliber of music that KXT does. There's certainly no other local station that has as much local music in regular rotation as KXT. This week, the Lucky Thirteen spotlights a small portion of the great tunes that can be heard on their station. If you like the station and what they do for local music, I would encourage you to donate whatever you can afford to.
Standard playlist disclaimer: any artists, record labels, etc. who do not wish to be on the playlist for any reason whatsoever, email me at ghostofblindlemon@gmail.com and I will gladly remove the track. And if you'd actually like to be on the playlist, you can use the same email addy to email me mp3's, and if I like the song then odds are it'll wind up on a playlist.

- "Allison", The Burning Hotels
This song is in regular rotation on both KXT and my iTunes. If you want to hear the song live, check them out Friday night at the Carrollton Festival at the Switchyards. If that isn't reason enough to head out to Carrollton Friday, Old 97's and Polyphonic Spree are performing the same night. Who'd have ever thought the place to be on a Friday night would be Carrollton? - "Clementine", Sarah Jaffe
I was driving one day, listening to this song on KXT. I heard Ms. Jaffe sing "I wish I was a little more delicate/I wish my name was Clementine." I feel like I've heard another local artist sing about wishing their name was something different. I'm trying to think of who that might be... - "Doctor's Not Gonna Cure Our Ills", The Beaten Sea
I'm finding myself liking this band a little more with each listen. - "Patricia Lynn", The Crash That Took Me
This is definitely one of the more rocking numbers I've heard on the station. - "Borrowed Time", The Monco Poncho
If I had to choose a favorite track from the band, this would be it. - "Talk To My Heart", THe BAcksliders
THe BAcksliders have definitely gone even poppier than before with this song. By poppy, I mean that not in a Lady Gaga sort of way, but more in a Cheap Trick sort of way. - "Shivonne", Menkena
I've never heard KXT play this song, but I've seen it listed on their playlist. Speaking of Menkena, when is the full length CD coming out? I'm getting impatient... - "Mine", Toadies
Most of the Toadies' material is a bit too aggressive to fit in on KXT, but they've managed to sneak this track off of Feeler into regular rotation. - "We Will All Be Changed", Seryn
This song is doing double duty. It's not only a representative of the fine music heard on KXT, but it also allows me the opportunity to hype Art Conspiracy, happening this Saturday. Seryn, Ishi, and Dem Southernfolkz will all be playing there. Click on the link for all the juicy details. - "Home", Deep Blue Something
If I had a dollar for every time the Observer made fun of DBS, I'd never have to work again. Personally, I've always thought the band was severely underappreciated.
Granted, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" got overplayed in a major way, but even that's a good song. Hearing KXT play this track, my favorite by the band, I felt like the station was validating my position on the band. - "Roscoe", Midlake
You know how I was talking about how I felt another artist besides Ms. Jaffe sing about wishing their name was something different. I'm still trying to think of what song that might be. - "Like a Liar", The Orbans
Not only has the band gotten love from KXT, NPR named this track the "song of the day" awhile back. You can give the band love this Saturday at the Carrolton Festival at the Switchyards. Carrollton, you're really rockin' right about now. - "For Keeps", Iris Leu
Of all the songs I've heard on KXT, this is probably the one that excited me the most. Not only have I been a long time advocate of Ms. Leu's music, on a personal level I've found her to be one of the nicest people I've gotten to know during my time as a blogger. The first time I heard this song on the radio, I was headed home, but found myself driving around the block a few extra times just to get all the way through the song. When was the last time a radio station made you do that?

The Lucky Thirteen: 8/23/10
- "You're No Good", Pale Horse
J.R. Denson and the gang from Pale Horse were kind enough to let me adopt their EP release party this Friday at Double-Wide as a post birthday celebration. Speaking of Pale Horse, J.R. and Aaron Carder were the first victims of a GOBL interview. If you had witnessed the interview, you'd know why I call them my victims. - "Just Wanna Try", Luna Matto
Why, oh, why, Luna? Why do you have to play Friday night against Pale Horse? It's been too long since I've seen one of your shows. Let's change that. The sooner, the better. - "Teenage Dope Fiend", Flickerstick
I got into a conversation about Flickerstick with a girl at the Airline Farewell show the previous weekend. Ever since that, the band's music has been on my mind. Here's one of my favorites from Tarantula. - "So in Love With You", Katie Carroll
First of all, thanks to all who came to Opening Bell Saturday night for my birthday celebration, musicians and friends alike. And I say an extra special thanks to Ms. Carroll for tossing me the first flower during this song. It made me feel special and all. - "¿Dónde Está Mi Pantalones? ", Clay Pendergrass
Mr. Pendergrass recently recorded a couple of new tracks, one of which ("Unicorn $") was originally going to be on this week's Lucky Thirteen. Alas, I couldn't download the track, so look for that track on an upcoming playlist. In the meantime, enjoy this song with the muy divertido title. - "German Chocolate Cake", Bravo Max
I previously mentioned how John Keener from Lakewood Bar & Grill is quite the fan of this band. I'm sure he's thrilled that they'll be playing at the bar this Friday night. - "Turn Out Empty", The Beaten Sea
After all the buzz that's been surrounding the band, I figured it was about time I give it a listen. I'm not going to lie; I'm not as in love with the band as many in the scene, but they do have some good tunes. "Turn Out Empty" definitely is a quite nice tune. - "Country Fried Quickie", Spector 45
Pale Horse isn't the only band with an EP release show this weekend. Spector 45 will be at La Grange this weekend, and I'll be continuing post-birthday celebrations there. - "Shake Your Dandelion", Ishi
After all, we all need to shake our dandelions from time to time. - "Tempo Bledsoe", Smile Smile
I liked Blue Roses, but their new CD, Truth on Tape, shows that the band is growing in its songwriting abilities. The title track is easily one of the songs I've listened to the most this year, and "Tempo Bledsoe" is quite a catchy tune as well. - "Punchline Afternoon", Charming Gardeners
Speaking of catchy, I just can't get enough of this tune. - "Alibi", The Orbans
Here's a leftover from Peter Black's days as a Lifter that made it onto When We Were Wild. This is easily the most rocking song off the band's new album, and probably my favorite as well. - "Godot", Carter Albrecht
Mike Snider and Allgood Cafe are throwing a little block party this Saturday that benefits the Carter Albrecht Music Foundation. There are too many good acts to list, so just click here to see the lineup. Sure, I could have posted a song by one of the performing artists, but it was the perfect excuse to post a Carter classic. Not that any excuse is needed.
